W. MARC LIM is a multipotentialite who wears many hats. He is currently an Adjunct Professor at Swinburne University's home campus in Australia, a Full Professor and the Dean of the Faculty of Business, Design and Arts at Swinburne University's international branch campus in Malaysia, the Founding Curator of Global Shapers Community Kuching Hub, the Editor in Chief of Activities, Adaptation and Aging, Global Business and Organizational Excellence, and International Journal of Quality and Innovation, an Associate Editor of Journal of Business Research and Journal of Strategic Marketing, a Guest Editor of Electronic Commerce Research and International Journal of Consumer Studies, and a Section Editor of Australasian Journal of Information Systems. He pursued his doctorate in business and economics at Monash University and postdoctoral certificates in leadership and strategic management at Cornell University and in education leadership and pedagogy at Harvard University and Swinburne University. He is also the Record Holder for "Youngest Professor" in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) and an Honoree of the Ten Outstanding Young Malaysians by Junior Chamber International (JCI). He has received many prestigious awards, such as the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science Publons Peer Reviewer Award (Winner 2019, 2018), the Emerald Publishing Interdisciplinary Research Impact Award (Highly Commended 2019), the Private Education Co-operative of Malaysia National Outstanding Educator Award (Winner 2019, Finalist 2018), the Swinburne Australia Vice Chancellor Teaching Excellence Award (Highly Commended 2019) and Research Excellence Award (Highly Commended 2018), the Swinburne Australia Research Impact Award (First Place 2019), and the Swinburne Sarawak Teaching Excellence Award (Winner 2020) and Research Excellence Award (Winner 2019).
Marc excelled throughout his academic career. He graduated from Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Selangor (national primary school) with straight As and from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan USJ 13 (national secondary school) as the Overall Best Student in Aliran Sastera (arts stream), where he also received the Best Student in Economics Award and subsequently obtained scholarships for his tertiary studies. He also graduated under the Dean’s Commendations List for Bachelor of Business and Commerce and under the Dean’s Honors List for Honors Degree of Bachelor of Business and Commerce at Monash University. His attainment of First Class Honors in his research field provided him advance admission into the Doctor of Philosophy course at Monash University, where he completed his thesis on deal activation in online group buying in 1 year and 8 months. Following his doctorate, Marc has pursued postdoctoral certificates in leadership and strategic management at Cornell University and in education leadership and pedagogy at Harvard University and Swinburne University.
As an academic, Marc has taught and received positive evaluations for many marketing units, including branding, innovation, and design; marketing channel design and integration; marketing theory and practice; and marketing research methods. Besides inventing and implementing the award-winning LABS pedagogy, Marc often shares his industry experience and research findings in class with the hope of producing well-rounded graduates. He also coaches industry consulting projects at the undergraduate level (Bachelor of Business) and supervises business research theses at the postgraduate level (Master of Business Administration (International), Master of Business (Research), and Doctor of Philosophy).
As an avid and leading researcher, Marc has a strong interest in finding solutions to complexities in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment. In addition, Marc has written for Free Malaysia Today (an independent news portal in Malaysia), Malaysiakini (an independent news portal in Malaysia), New Mandala (a publication by Australian National University), The Borneo Post (a local newspaper in Sabah and Sarawak), New Straits Time (the oldest newspaper in Malaysia), and The Star (the national newspaper with the widest circulation in Malaysia). To date, Marc has more than 100 publications to his name (including 115 articles in 62 different A*/A-ranked or Q1-ranked journals and 5 articles shortlisted for/recognized with the Best Paper Award) and received over $10,000,000 in funding.
As a changemaker, Marc speaks at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the World Economic Forum (WEF) as an invited and sponsored speaker (discussion leader, panelist). He interacts with senior government officials, including current and former premiers of Australia, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam, and prominent business leaders and social activists, with the goal of engineering meaningful and progressive changes for the well-being of myriad stakeholders in both local and international communities. He also supports numerous governmental, intergovernmental, and non-governmental organizations and regularly attends and contributes to social engagement programs that bridge the gap between the government and the public and that foster nation building, empowerment, and unity.
In addition, Marc has experience chairing and auditing in the panel of assessors for internal and external course audits commissioned by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and the Malaysia Board of Technologies (MBOT), as a Principal of Nation Building School, as a Global Shaper at the Global Shapers Community Kuala Lumpur Hub, as a Head of School and an Associate Dean at Swinburne University, as an Associate Director at the Swinburne Sarawak Research Centre, and as a Program Leader at the Swinburne Social Innovation Research Institute.
